This file has not been updated since 1996 or earlier. Beware! This is the file /pub/tunes/tunes.catalog on ceolas.org. This directory contains the music for a number of tunes in different formats and some software, as part of an experiment in electronic distribution of traditional music. Thanks to Dan Beimborn, John Walsh, George Keith, Alan Ng, Richard Robinson, Peter Rayner, Chris Walshaw, Walter Innes and all the others who have submitted files or ideas. As a rough overview: the most popular electronic format for celtic tunes is now abc notation. It's pretty easy to learn and can be translated to staff notation nicely by using a combination of abc2mtex, Music.TeX and TeX. Unfortunately, installing all of that takes a lot of space and is not easy. However, it should work on almost all computers. Alan Ng's abcwin package for Windows machines should avoid most of that trouble. (Macheads - don't despair, a version of abc2mtex for Mac, with directions, is in the works, for Summer/Fall 1995). This archive now has over 100 tunes in abc format. If you just want to view a tune, we have files in two other formats: Chris Walshaw has made postscript versions of most of his abc tunes; these can be printed directly to most laser printers as well as viewed onscreen with programs such as ghostview, and Richard Robinson has created a separate collection of files in gif format, which can be viewed on most kinds of computer. Richard's collection is best viewed through the WorldWide Web at the URL: http://celtic.stanford.edu/pub/tunes/RRTunebook/tunebook.html Bagpipe afficionados have their own package which runs on top of MusicTeX and a large collection of tunes in that format, and Walter Innes has converted all of these to postscript format. Gerard Manning MIDI Short collections of Irish tunes in MIDI format, compressed with zip (IBM PC). Utilities Programs for decoding the gzip (.gz) compression used for some tunes (gzip-1.2.4.msdos.exe for DOS and macgzip0.3b4.cpt.hqx for Mac) and downloading the postscript files to a printer (drop-ps-113.hqx for Mac, nothing yet for Windows, but I'm looking...). Princess_Beatrice.ps Postscript file of a short tune. Music.Printer This directory contains a number of files for a demo version of Music Printer, an IBM PC program for printing Midi files. According to the note I got with them, run Install.exe to unpack the other files. MuTeX Files for MuTeX, an extension of the TeX word processor to enable it to handle music. Music.TeX This is another add-on to turn TeX into a music processor. It is more modern and powerful than MuTeX, but the output is apparently not quite as nice as with MuTeX. This directory has copies of MusicTeX for Unix (compressed with gzip) and PC- compatibles (compressed with pkunzip). The current version is 5.02. Includes an example tune, jennysWelcome.tex from John Walsh RRTunebook Directory containing Richard Robinson's Tunebook of celtic and traditional folk tunes (in TIFF). This is primarily designed to be used with a World Wide Web client such as Mosaic - the files can be downloaded and browsed from your own disk with Mosaic. bagpipe.tex MusicTeX macro package that aids typesetting of bagpipe music bagpipe.clip.art Images in GIF and MacPaint format, can be cut and pasted to make bagpipe staff notation. By James Platt abc2mtex Another TeX utility which allows entry of tunes in a simple (abc) format and converts them to Music TeX files. abc.tunes Subdirectory containing several collections of tunes in abc format. These include sessionTunes.abc, a collection of 62 common Irish sesion tunes, by John Walsh; the sequel, sessionTunesII.abc (with notes: sessionTunesII.txt); pipersClub.abc, 14 tunes arranged by John for Uileann pipe. Peter Rayner has contributed 75 tunes in moreTunes.abc, and many more in a series of other files (x..). There are also postscript versions of many of these tunes in the subdirectory abc.tunes.ps. See the Utilities directory for programs to print postscript and decode the .gz compression used for some of these files. abcwin Set of files contributed by Alan Ng which allow Windows users to typeset and print out abc notation tunes. playabc-1.1.tar.Z Program by Don Ward which allows tunes in abc format to be played on the internal speaker of a most Unix computers. tunes.bagpipe.tex Collection of over 100 tunes in TeX format for bagpipe. From Walt Innes. Now includes postscript (.ps) versions of the full collection. xmas tunes A few collections of tunes with a Christmas theme, by John Walsh and Richard Robinson. These are in TeX, postscript and GIF formats hilbilpi.zip zip-encoded image files of some American fiddle tunes arranged for bagpipe. From James Stewart, nigel@uxa.cso.uiuc.edu music.programs List of music notation programs for many different computers midi2tex As the name implies, a converter from MIDI to Music.TeX formats. This has versions for IBM PC and Atari ST tunelist.dan A list of Dan Beimborn's favourite tunes, with their sources in printed collections.
